WordPress and most plugins built for it are released under the GPL, which lets anyone copy and redistribute the code. That is why 'GPL sites' can legally sell or give away Elementor Pro's files. What the GPL does not give you is Elementor's update server, template library, support or an activation, and 'nulled' copies go further by editing the code to fake an activation, often adding malware. AI Web Tools does neither: it activates the genuine plugin under its own Elementor subscription, so updates come from Elementor.
What the GPL actually says
The GNU General Public License gives anyone who receives the software the freedom to run it, study it, share it and modify it, as long as they pass on the same freedoms. WordPress itself is GPL, and WordPress.org's position is that plugins and themes that extend it inherit the license for their PHP code. Elementor publishes the Pro plugin's PHP under the GPL as well; images, CSS and JavaScript assets can carry other terms, and the Elementor name and logo are trademarks of Elementor Ltd.
GPL sites: legal to copy, not the same product
Because the PHP is GPL, a site that redistributes Elementor Pro's files is usually within the license. What you receive is a snapshot: a zip file of some version. You get no connection to Elementor's servers, so no update notices, no Pro template library, no support, and no way to know whether the file was altered on the way. Many such sites charge a yearly membership, which buys you the next snapshot when they get around to it.
Nulled: not GPL, just cracked
A nulled copy has had its license check edited out or faked so the plugin thinks it is active. That modification is where the trouble starts: the people doing it are anonymous, the files are passed around through Telegram groups and download sites, and the common extras are backdoors, hidden admin users, spam links injected into your pages and redirects for your visitors. Search engines flag infected sites, and cleaning one costs more than a genuine license ever would.
How to tell what you have
- Open Elementor › License in WordPress. A genuine activation shows connected and active, with the option to disconnect.
- Dashboard › Updates offers Pro updates when Elementor releases them. A GPL snapshot never does; a nulled copy may show a fake "active" but still never updates.
- Try importing a Pro template kit. Without a real activation the library fails to load.
- Scan the site with a reputable malware scanner if you inherited it from someone else.
Where AI Web Tools fits
AI Web Tools is not a GPL site and does not touch the plugin's code. We hold an Elementor Pro agency subscription and connect your website to it, so Elementor's servers treat your site as licensed: updates arrive, templates import, and the file is the one Elementor ships. The limits are honest ones: one site per activation, 12 months at a time, and the subscription is in our name, not yours. If you need the license in your own name, buy from Elementor.
