A proper WordPress backup copies both the files and the database, runs automatically on a schedule, is stored somewhere other than the same server, and has been restored at least once so you know it works. Use your host's backups plus a plugin such as UpdraftPlus sending copies to cloud storage, and take a manual backup before every big update.
What to back up
- Database: pages, posts, Elementor designs, settings, orders and form submissions.
- Files: wp-content (uploads, plugins, themes). WordPress core can be reinstalled, but including it costs little.
A routine that works
- Daily database backups and weekly file backups for a normal business site; more often for a busy shop.
- Send copies to cloud storage you control, not only to the hosting account.
- Keep several weeks of copies, so you can go back past a problem you noticed late.
- Before updates, imports or theme changes, run a manual backup.
- Every few months, restore a backup to a test site to prove it works.
If you would rather not manage it
AI Web Tools' Pro + Care plan at ₨2,999 a year includes monthly backups along with plugin and theme updates and small fixes. Busy sites should still keep the host's daily backups switched on.
